Keep Yourself Healthy: Get up and Move!

You are driving down the road and you see someone walking at a very fast pace. Speed walking like they are on a mission! You think to yourself, “Why don’t they just jog? They practically are anyway.” Or maybe you see someone jogging, their pace seems very slow and you think to yourself, “Why don’t they just walk? They practically are anyway.”

Well first of all, why are you not out walking or jogging? Second, a lot of people do not know this, but these two activities can accomplish different things when it comes to your health.

Speed walking is actually a great workout and is suggested for those whose main goal is weight loss, as well as those with knee, hip or back pain. This is because, walking is less jarring to those parts of your body than jogging or running.

Sure, you may have to spend extra time and go a little further to burn the same amount of calories as a run or a jog would burn but it is still a great option that will get you results in the weight loss department.

If losing weight is not your primary focus, jogging is great for maintaining cardiovascular health. Jogging can significantly reduce your risk of developing Coronary Heart Disease, which kills hundreds of thousands of people each year. In fact, it is the number three cause of death in the United States.

As you consistently continue jogging, your heart will begin to function at a higher level. This is because jogging helps to increase your maximum oxygen intake, which allows you to move oxygen around your body more quickly while you exercise. Speed walking, jogging, running, or whatever you choose; just get out there and move!
